Dental implants are quickly becoming a preferred method among patients for having missing teeth replaced. Unlike dentures, another tooth replacement option, dental implants are permanently affixed in the mouth and will not come loose or slide out of place. Additionally, implants look and function like natural teeth.
Dr. Rujul Parikh, of Central Valley Dentist, is your implant dentist in Manteca and Stockton, CA. He has extensive experience installing new implants and restoring existing ones. Dr. Parikh can help you determine if dental implants are right for you.
Benefits of Dental Implants
There are many benefits to having dental implants installed versus being fitted for dentures. As mentioned, dental implants are permanently fixed in place. There is no risk of the implants slipping out of place when eating or talking. They do not require the use of messy adhesives and are quite durable. With proper oral hygiene that includes regular dental checkups and professional teeth cleanings, dental implants can last for an entire lifetime. Your implant dentist can advise you further on how to properly care for your dental implants.
Installing Dental Implants
Dental implants are comprised of several parts, including the implant, an abutment, and a crown. The implant portion looks like a small metal post. It is typically made from hypoallergenic titanium and is embedded directly into the jawbone. The implant will act as a replacement for the tooth’s root.
Over time, the metal implant will fuse with the jawbone through a process known as osseointegration. Fusion takes several months. Once complete, the abutment is screwed onto the implant and will hold the crown, or replacement tooth in place. The crown is then screwed or cemented onto the abutment and installation of the dental implant is complete.
Dental implants are a convenient option for replacing missing teeth. Since they are permanently rooted in place, they look and function just like natural teeth. Other than you and your implant dentist, no one has to know your implant is not an original tooth.
